I hope you read Judge Posner’s article The Bluebook Blues, 120 Yale L.J. 850 (2011). At this time of year in an academic law library it’s all about the citations. You either embrace the madness or go mad yourself. An excellent resource for understanding citation format is Peter Martin’s Basic Legal Citation, updated in 2010. He explains some of the background and gives examples for both The Bluebook and ALWD citation manuals.
