The Boxer Turned Lawyer Turned Writer

perry mason season 1It’s the birthday of one of the bestselling mystery writers of all time, Erle Stanley Gardner. He also happens to be one of the most prolific mystery writers of all time, but writing wasn’t his first job. It was boxing: illegal matches to earn money in high school. His enrollment at Valparaiso University (to study law) was a short one: he got kicked out for boxing. Undaunted, he studied on his own and passed the California bar exam at 21. While working as a lawyer he started writing pulp fiction to keep busy, churning out 4,000 words a day. Gardner went on to write all kinds of work but he’s most famous for his brilliant defense attorney Perry Mason, a character who appears in over 80 novels and is arguably the most famous television lawyer ever.
