App of the Week: Black’s Law Dictionary

Logo for the Black's Law Dictionary AppThis week’s featured app is Black’s Law Dictionary® 9th Edition. Black’s, of course, is widely considered to be the definitive legal dictionary, but at $54.99 to download, this might be the most expensive app you ever consider loading onto your iPhone or Windows Phone (it’s not yet available for Android devices). Depending on how you prefer to access information, its utility and portability may make it worth the expense. It does cost considerably less than the print version and you can carry it with you everywhere (access on or off-line). In addition to more than 45,000 terms, you can access alternate spellings or equivalent expressions for more than 5,300 terms, West key numbers, definitions of more than 1,000 law-related abbreviations and acronyms, the Featured Word of the Day, and nearly 3,000 quotations drawn from sources over five centuries. Hyperlinked cross-references make related terms easy to find, and you can bookmark terms for quick reference. The app also features audio pronunciations for thousands of hard-to-say legal terms. We invite you to pick up an app card at the Circulation or Reference Desk and investigate further.

Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.1 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (optimized for iPhone 5) and Windows Phone 7.8/8
