It’s Twilight Weekend in Athens

For those of you unacquainted with this tradition, the Twilight Criterium is a nighttime professional cycling event that’s been taking place in downtown Athens, since 1980. One of the oldest and best attended crits in the nation, it’s become the centerpiece of a busy weekend that includes a 5k foot race, a BMX bike competition, and the Twilight Americana Music Festival.

In keeping with the theme of the weekend, we’ve put together a few cycling-related resources:

The Georgia Governor’s Bicycle Safety in Georgia website, a clearinghouse for Georgia laws relevant to cyclists, with tips & tools for cyclists, and bicycle and pedestrian links.

For statewide cycling information including a calendar of cycling events, there’s Bicycle Georgia. For the city of Athens, there’s the nonprofit education and advocacy group, BikeAthens.

For enthusiasts of cycling’s legal history, we have this digitized gem from 1895, The road rights and liabilities of wheelmen : with table of contents and list of cases by George B. Clementson. It was the quote in the front that captured our attention:

To the devotees of terrestrial flight in its most exhilarating form, this little book is dedicated.

Terrestrial flight, indeed! Enjoy your Twilight Weekend!
