Ninth Circuit Now Publishing Own Opinions

Citing an estimated savings of $350,000 for the first full year of in-house production, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a press release yesterday announcing that it had begun processing its opinions in-house instead of continuing to contract with West Publishing for that service.  The press release described the processing now undertaken by court staff, including conversion of files to Adobe PDF and, more importantly, the creation of opinion summaries. Previously, the opinion summaries written by West Publishing could not be included with the opinions posted on the court’s site.

The court also announced that its opinions will now be formatted to provide optimal viewing on tablets, reflecting “the growing use of tablets by both the bench and bar.”
