New Book: Honor and Revenge

Honor-and-Revenge-A-Theory-of-PunishmentIn the new book Honor and Revenge: A Theory of Punishment (Law Library Balcony K5103 .K38 2013), author Whitley R. P. Kaufman notes that criminal punishment is in “a scandalous state” and that generally there is not “any clear idea of just what the purpose of punishment is supposed to be.” The author poses the question of whether punishment itself can be morally justified, then examines the “paradox of retribution” and explores the idea of defense of the honor of the victim as a moral justification of the institution of punishment.
