Watching the Weather

On Wednesday, February 8, the National Weather Service will initiate a statewide severe weather drill. You may hear the campus outdoor tornado sirens, but the law school will not interrupt classes or normal work activities for the drill. If you are in the library during an actual severe weather warning please follow the instructions given by the library staff. They will ask you to take shelter.

Shelter locations

Reading Room & Balcony – Go to the basement
Annex – Go to the hallway on the west side of the first floor (behind the microform cabinets)
The most important thing to do is STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS

Alert System – UGA will test its emergency alert system. Check your information.

Keeping Tabs on the Georgia legislature

After a brief recess for budget hearings, the Georgia General Assembly will reconvene this Monday, January 23. Keep track of the 2012 legislative session via the General Assembly’s site. In addition to providing the text and status of proposed legislation, the site offers live feeds from both the Senate and the House. Georgia Public Broadcasting provides video archives of both houses’ sessions as well. For a fee, GeorgiaTrack provides an online legislation tracking service to update you re the status of specific bills during the legislative process.

Websites to Protest Legislation Tomorrow

Th Internet is going to be in a very interesting state tomorrow. In regards to the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), sometimes referred to as “The Great Firewall of America,” some the of biggest sites out there are planning some form of protest. Many web sites, including Wikipedia, reddit, and Mozilla, will be blacking out access and providing information on how to contact members of Congress. And even though it will still be available, Google will be adding a link to their home page addressing their opposition to the legislation. To learn more about why the Internet seems to be making a really big deal out of this, check out this explanation.

Notable Books of 2011

The New York Times issued their 100 Notable Books of 2011 recently. A couple of law related titles made the list including John A. Farrell’s Clarence Darrow: Attorney for the Damned and Richard T. Ford’s Rights Gone Wrong: How Law Corrupts the Struggle for Equality. Both books are available in the Law Library!

MapLight — Money and Politics

MapLight is a great website for researching political contributions to Congress and companies that are attempting to influence passing certain bills. This website provides data on campaign contributions for each member of Congress, how each member voted on a bill, and which interest groups/companies support and oppose certain bills.

Stanford Launches China Guiding Cases Project

Stanford law school recently launched a website that is designed to assist judges, lawyers and scholars in understanding Chinese law. This website will publish translated versions of the “guiding cases” issued by the Chinese Supreme Court. Individuals from around the world will then be able to comment on the cases to add their various insights to the opinions.

Heads up re Annex

Completion of our heating/cooling (HVAC) project will make the Law Library Annex inhospitable beginning the afternoon of Friday, December 9. The Annex will be both cold and noisy. The rest of the Law Library will function normally. We expect a much-improved Annex climate by the beginning of next semester!

Human Rights Day commemorates the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. This year, you can celebrate by joining in a live conversation with Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at 9:30am EST, Friday, December 9. Submit your questions for Commissioner Pillay in advance via Twitter or Facebook (questions in Chinese can also be submitted using Weibo).
